The farmer's protest against the Indian agricultural reforms - a thread

President Ram Nath Kovind on Sept 27 gave his nod to the 3 bills passed by the Parliament. This was followed by a consequential outburst including terming the amendments “Anti Farmer” and outrage across the nation especially the states Punjab, Haryana, and Bihar
What are the three new acts you ask? Well let’s start with their names:

Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act 2020

Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020

Essential Commodities Act 2020
The Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce act allows the inter/intra state trade of the farmer’s produce beyond APMC and other markets. Before this act agricultural trade was limited to APMC mandis. The intent behind this act is to facilitate lucrative prices for farmers
The 2nd act gives farmers the legal capacity to be able to draw contracts before actual production of their crops. These contracts can act as collateral for them to be able to collect formal loans in place of informal loans (infamous for very high-interest rates)
The third act initially established to regulate the delivery of certain products that are essential for one’s daily routine. The amendment act limits the “stocking” of these items only under exceptional circumstances like war, famines or high change in price
Green Revolution:
India was desperately short of grains in the 1960s. In fact, India was on the brink of mass famine in 1961. Hence India started importing its grains from the US under the PL 480 scheme which was an initiative by the US to trade surplus its commodities
These imports also led to a reduced price of these commodities in the market and hence disincentivized the farmers to produce these crops creating a vicious cycle for Indian agriculture
The Green Revolution leveraged agricultural research and technology to increase agricultural productivity in the developing world leading to an increase in food grain production, especially in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh
fter almost a month of protests against this development, a special session was held by the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday, October 22. This session rejected the three amendments and passed three influenced farm bills for the state of Punjab hence exempting it from the central laws
Currently, hundreds of farmers have been protesting on different borders of the national capital since No 26. There is a gross communication failure by the central government in explaining to the farmers what these laws are, and how they are intended to benefit them
Multiple dialogues between the Union Government and the representative body of the protests have taken place but little progress has been made
