So Chainsaw Man is reportedly moving to Jump+ in Japan for its serialization. Here's a thread on what this does mean, could possibly mean, and almost certainly doesn't mean.
First off, for folks confused about what "Jump+" even means: it's the name of the web/app service Shueisha uses to publish Shonen Jump titles digitally.
On top of having WSJ chapters (similar to the Viz "Shonen Jump" and "MangaPLUS" apps in the rest of the world) they also have original series that release exclusively on the app. For example: SPY X FAMILY, KAIJU NO. 8, BLUE FLAG, ASTRA LOST IN SPACE & many more are on Jump+
It's worth noting this means "Jump+" gets listed as the "magazine" the series publish in despite not being, you know, a magazine. And series can have different publication schedules (read: weekly, biweekly, or sometimes monthly) and thus don't release all at once like JUMP proper
This is important because last month it as announced "Jump+ Magazine" was moving to monthly publication and people thought that meant KAIJU, SXF etc would become monthly. They won't. "Jump+ Magazine" is a separate thing from the manga service. Don't worry about it.
Anyway, this means CHAINSAW MAN's publication could largely stay the same moving forward, or it could change. But keep in mind this isn't a demotion or downgrade from a publishing standpoint. Jump+ still make bank and release physical volumes.
Next up is speculation based on what I've seen as a reader for years. I'm not an expert or insider and this is all just one person's take on possible reasons for this change.
Now, CSM routinely pushed the envelope for a JUMP series in terms of violence and storytelling. It famously has entire chapters of sprawling action with little to no dialogue, and likely skews older than JUMP's stated target demographic.
So it's *possible* the decision to move to Jump+ was because CSM was increasingly feeling like an outlier to editorial. This has happened before where a series moved to a different magazine that was a better fit for it.
It's also possible that, with Fujimoto's taste for escalation, that CSM's story moving forward could become something they wouldn't be comfortable publishing right next to One Piece or MHA, and so moving it would mean less worry over selling JUMP issues as collections.
The move to digital in particular makes me hypothesize that Fujimoto may have chafed with the more restrictive page limits and weekly deadlines of a print magazine. If CSM becomes a biweekly or monthly series that strikes me as the likely reason behind the move.
(This is not to imply any inherent fault in a weekly print release, but the logistics of publication necessarily effects the content and finding an approach that best suits the artist is almost always a good choice)
What this SHOULDN'T mean is any significant change for the official international release, barring a possible change in schedule. Viz and MangaPLUS publish plenty of Jump+ series and i can think of no likely reason they would stop with a series as popular as CSM.
So outside of (possibly) changing to every 2 weeks or every month, the biggest shift I would expect is chapters releasing on a different day, like KAIJU NO. 8 coming out on Thursdays.
Otherwise I expect Chainsaw Man will stay, well, Chainsaw Man and also people won't have to dodge spoilers from leaked chapters every week. Yay.
