WAR ON CHRISTMAS, SHOTS FIRED
I just had to inform a woman who is making this wreath know that she is breaking the law by shipping a state listed noxious weed all over Florida. All those little red berries on the left are fertile Brazilian Peppertree seeds.
Ignore the typo...I've only had one cup of coffee
Between $2-3 mil/yr is spent on conservation lands to control Brazilian Peppertree. It forms a dense canopy that shades out native plants, displaces rare &endangered species, &encroaches on nesting habitat of threatened gopher tortoises. AND it's related to poison ivy!
Generally, state and federal agencies spend about $43 annually to control invasive plants in FL. Globally, invasive species are one of the top 5 drivers of biodiversity decline. This wreath might seem small, but it's kind of a big deal. Also, I was nice and tried to educate.
And FYI...Up north there are wreaths sold that use Celastrus (oriental bittersweet) berries. They are pretty, but this is a very problematic invasive species. Seeds are fertile &wreaths spread the seeds, you put on door, bird eat seeds &spread or you throw it out when finished.
Here's what a Celastrus invasion looks like in a natural area
