Reminder to all those coming off campaign work and trying to hop to D.C. for the first time:

There's no perfect path to your ideal job. Friends and acquaintances will land gigs you salivate over - but don't be jealous! Support them, cheer them, *hear* them.
Then make a list of people and organizations you WANT to work for. I've done this since I lived in Boston (because I only ever wanted to work for C-SPAN) and guess what? I've been able to check off so many orgs. and people on my list over 10+ years.
And by the way: A decade is like nothing in D.C.

I met @tammy that long ago - and we finally found a way to collaborate. @stereogab is a baller that propped me up then recruited me. @senatorshoshana is better in person than on Twitter, y'all. @kellycarnes is 🤯
I then likewise found myself working with (and introduced to) people like @candiobrentz @alexmae @rachaelgking @mtfarnsworth @amywebb who then led me to follow @amzam @eramshaw and the list of amazing women is way too long (and so many aren't on twitter, those smart people.)
I used to get frustrated that I wasn't at the orgs. everyone else was. And then I realized that my own path wasn't taking me there: It was putting me places where I cared about the mission, and how to make a difference in my own way.

I'm like no other comms. person I know.
I still want to work at LEGO, journalism comms again, in human rights and somehow somewhere give books to people like Dolly P.

And those will probably come. (And have I mentioned how lucky I am to be at an org. that wants to embrace my style of zany?)
But until then, you learn from the places you are - what works, what doesn't (more importantly), you fail, you succeed, you experiment, you grind, and you let go when it's too much.

So keep pushing, soak in the moments, & tweet nicely at those people that seem out of your orbit.
