I've spoken to 1000s of remote leaders & workers over last 2 yrs while building @RemoteTools about the future of remote managers.
Here's how the role of remote managers will evolve in 2021 & beyond
Here's how the role of remote managers will evolve in 2021 & beyond

1/ Managers will play a more critical role in remote team productivity & success
Employees are already working more hours & have higher productivity remotely
Managers will have to look after employees' well-being and that they are recognised to ensure long-term success

2/ Managers will have to do more # of regular check-ins via voice/video calls
In a remote setting, the only thing employees care & talk about is how effectively their leaders communicate with them - employees won't talk about the office, location etc.

3/ Managers will have to consciously involve employees in decision making
New survey by @cmi_managers showed that 50% of managers believed they involve employees in decision-making but only 27% employees agreed ⟹ Conscious effort needed on part of managers

4/ Managers will need to create an open environment to talk about mental health & wellbeing
Loneliness & isolation are biggest challenges of remote working
Managers have to ensure that employees can discuss these problems freely & openly

5/ Managers will be responsible for ensuring diversity & inclusion in the workplace
Employees will have max touchpoints with their manager & it's critical that managers make everyone feel safe & recognised regardless of race, gender etc.
Global hiring will also give a push

6/ New leadership & managerial roles will evolve around remote working
'Head of Remote' is already becoming a popular role pioneered by @gitlab's @darrenmurph. We will see more companies adopt this role in 2021 & similar interesting roles pop up e.g. 'remote office manager'
