I remember delivering a workshop to some yr 7 pupils at a school. There was a teacher present.

I was doing a piece around difficult home life and what it can feel like.

The teacher removed one of the boys who was curled over the table, head in arms.
He came back in 2 mins later and remained sat up but was completely tuned out & not present.

I asked the teacher why he was removed and she said because he wasn’t being respectful and wasn’t interacting.
I told her that he was actually doing both of those things until he was removed.

His head in arms was the most respectful way he could communicate that he was too overwhelmed with what was being said while remaining in the workshop without little or no disruption.
Once he left and was told to only act a certain way... we lost him.

Children are always communicating.

Are we listening?
