This week I have been in Paris, Hiroshima, London (twice) and back to Hiroshima. I've heard from people in Chile, New Zealand, Japan, Poland, Italy, Turkey, Ireland etc. etc. All in a week where I could not have left home becasue of caring responsibilities.
I'm not adding up the carbon because I would not have made those flights and couldnt have done this schedule. The level of discussion now we use the chat function properly is better than a presentation slot at a conference.
We (particularly) academics cannot go back to what we did before. This has to be more inclusive in almost every dimension and is leading to a more rapid sharing of science.
Sure - I dont want to sit at my desk forever but that does not mean schlepping round the country/world without a very clear purpose. There are downsides (e.g. language) but lets improve those Of course the social side is a miss but the climate emergency meant that ship had sailed
