Been seeing a lot of back and forth regarding #SelenaNetflix . Once again, this all comes down to what happens when examples of representation within our community are still very scarce.
Fact 1: Series has been number 1 on Netflix for several days now. Not only in US. But in other Latin American countries. A big flipping deal that needs to be celebrated. That alone should prove to Netflix that US Latino stories have appeal and that more of them have to be made.
Yet, this is the thing between being popular and being exceptional as a show. It is HARD to be exceptional. And that's ok. What should not happen (ever) is that everyone needs to praise something that was a mixed bag or else you lose your Latino card.
As with any form of entertainment, in the end it is perfectly legit for each viewer to form an opinion and if that viewer is critical, that's fine. They shouldn't be lambasted for betraying la raza because of it.
The bigger issue is all about access and who gets the $ to tell stories. And that's where the real work happens. There are so many ways to get there and we should be uplifting every one of those efforts and not just settle.
But spare me the take that if people are critical of #SelenaNetflix , it will mean less work for Latino storytellers. Quite the opposite. I choose the path of pushing countless more of these projects and raising the bar for exceptional storytelling.
