Racism and Dog poo syndrome, a short thread.
1/8
This week I've seen many people bemoaning the fact that Britain is no longer the tolerant country it was.
The catalyst this time was the booing by Millwall fans of players taking a knee to support racial equality.
2/8
The line is that Britain is much less tolerant than it was before the Brexit vote.
There may be truth in that, the intolerance is definitely more noticeable now, but has it just appeared?
My view is that it is what I now call "Dog poo syndrome".
Remember when
3/8 we were kids and there was dog poo everywhere? It was in the street, in the park, a real daily hazard.
Over time though, it became socially unacceptable for walkers to leave their dog's poo, and this was accompanied by fewer dogs on the streets, also a social change.
4/8
Had those people actually changed, or was their lack of concern for others just suppressed by social pressure?
If they could get away with it, maybe their dog poo would still be left there?
As for racism, that gradually, and by welcome necessity, became socially
5/8
unnaceptable.
Maybe not so much in private. After all, we've seen many press and social media exposés of racism in social and private situations.
I can also remember growing up in the 70s hearing casual racism everywhere. I even heard members of my own family,
6/8 who called themselves socialists (and were died in the wool Labour voters) saying how "Enoch Powell was right" and how they agreed with what the National Front was saying.
When I was old enough, I started calling them out on it.
I still do- because they still say it;
7/8
more discreetly maybe; but say it they do.
All that had changed in recent years was that racism, like allowing your dog to poo everywhere, had become socially unnacceptable.
Brexit didn't change those attitudes, it just meant that casually lobbing racist comments is
8/8
seen as an acceptable form of expression again now, at least by some.
The attitudes behind the racism have never changed though.
Expect a lobby for their "right" to let their dogs casually crap everywhere too in the near future.
Dogs sadly, are a mirror of their owners.
