🧵 Interesting this 'British history' podcast muted a thread by a qualified PhD whose area of expertise is exactly what this wyte dude argues against. He's not qualified, but thinks he's qualified enough to discount a BIPOC expert's work. Let's examine this claim #medievaltwitter https://twitter.com/BritishPodcast/status/1336500267357900800
He claims to be both a Marxist & antiracist b/c he supports BLM. The virtue signalling is strong in him, but the fact that he discounts a Black scholar's open access article immediately reveals he doesn't understand how racism & academia works. Also I literally made this info 2/
available to a wider audience to make it easier for everyone, instead of putting it behind a paywall or publishing it in a journal (which I am also doing) so that ppl wouldn't have access. So he's not abt sharing knowledge, accessibility or learning. The thing abt being BIPOC 3/
scholars is that wyte dudes (&women b/c his know-it-all Gramsci loving female friend was in there) w/ no qualifications will always think they know more than us. I am literally a PhD & the history of the term AS is one of my areas of expertise now, but this rando from Portland 4/
not only thinks he's more qualified, he's basing his understanding on his feelings. He has poor understanding of the term (at best), & believes he's fighting fascism, but won't stop using a term that has been misused for 400 yrs. BIPOC scholars were initially accused of basing 5/
For ANYONE who is even remotely knowledgeable of the time & the ppl in early England, you'd know that "Anglo-Saxon" wasn't used in the 6th c. by the ppl. Neither the 7th. Bede used Anglorum which doesn't translate to "Anglo-Saxon." But this guy has had a podcast for 10 yrs! 6/
BIPOC scholars were initially accused of basing arguments on 'feelings' by pointing to the racist history of "Anglo-Saxon." We are armed w/ historical, literary, linguistic evidence & ppl refuse to listen & learn. The truth is wyte ppl are just attached to the term. 7/
So back to accessibility for a second. 1 minute he didn't read it, the next he just outright doesn't read anything that isn't in a journal? If he & his friend had READ the 3-part series, listened to the lectures embedded & read the books & academic articles they claim don't 8/
exist (even tho academic things are LISTED in part 3 of the series), we wouldn't be here doing a thread showing their asses. So some wyte ppl just want to be right. BIPOC scholars can throw every bit of evidence at them, publish in academic journals &write open access articles 8/
and wyte ppl will continue to believe they are right when they aren't. These ppl w/ no background in medieval studies, run a podcast on British history &will not do the 'research' b/c they're lazy & wytness works. Ppl want to be spoonfed but when you give them the spoon 9/
they expect you to open their mouths for them too. Anyway whoever these "leftists" are, they're neither antiracist allies nor antifascists. They believe their authority is in just simply having a podcast for 10 yrs. As a reminder, saying you're something doesn't make it true. 10/
Action is essential & claiming to BIPOC you're an ally means you aren't. One of them had the audacity to speak for Blk ppl, & then disappeared when called out. This has been an example of wyteness at work. Just b/c ppl have a rose in their bio doesn't mean they are antiracist 11/
just like having BLM in your bio doesn't mean anything if you don't put into practice what you say. Having a rose in your bio doesn't even mean you are antifascist & remember that being antifascist doesn't mean you can't be racist. Antiracist & antifascist praxis both require 12/
work. If you aren't willing to listen & learn you're not an ally. You don't get to speak for Black ppl, undermine them, reject their scholarship and claim you are an expert b/c you are a wyte man or woman. You may think like it's 1840 but we'll whoop your ass like it's 2021. /13
lol just realized tweet 5 has an extra sentence at the end and I pick it up again in tweet 7. Y'all are amazing to read through my errors.
