...is it that simple?
When we look at the location of those excess deaths we find they are all in private homes and care homes.
So yes, they didn't happen in hospitals.
But why? What were the causes?

Look how the excess closely follows the rise and fall of the first wave, and remember these deaths are happening outside hospitals.

... The disease & location matter for 2 reasons:
* the fact that in the elderly confusion/fatigue is sometimes the only symptom of Covid. Characteristics already on display in Dementia patients.
* NOBODY was being tested for Coronavirus outside hospitals

So the "Non-Covid" Excess Deaths are, in reality, mostly deaths from causes that can present Covid-like symptoms, but can't be tested for Covid due to the lack of Coronavirus testing in spring.
In other words, untested, unconfirmed, but likely COVID-19 deaths.

ONS already did an analysis on this in June - and came to the same conclusion... "undiagnosed COVID in the elderly being the most likely explanation for a majority of excess deaths that did not mention CV on certs"
