So I am about to make a nuclear take that will earn me a lot of ire from people but it needs to be said and it concerns Cyberpunk.
Tomorrow Cyberpunk 2078, a game I have looked forward to ever since its logo reveal waaaaaaay back when. When Witcher 3 came out, I genuinely believe it drastically moved the standard for what RPG's should do going forward and I have the same expectations with Cyberpunk 2077
I am by all means a massive Cyberpunk fanboy and I have definitely been biased when it has come to news about CD Projekt Red that definitely should have earned more scorn from me than it has received.
The game has been a controversial piece ever since we first started getting access to it behind the curtains and almost every big controversy about it has made my brain itch and forced me to groan and rub my face.
I could go through each controversy point by point and point out how dumb it is: The haitian gang, the transhumanism poster, the naked girl in the bathtub and much more, but it all comes down to people not understanding cyberpunk as a genre
These whiney people are way too used to the cushy black and white games and there is nothing wrong with that, but they are instilling this narrow-minded belief that other games should be the same onto other games and it infuriates me.
In the cyberpunk universe the only thing sacred is the human soul. Literally everything else has a pricetag. Your body can be changed and switched, your gender holds little to no meaning and the world has become a melting pot of social norms, cultures and ideologies.
It is a dirty and dark and foreboding world that is supposed to make you first go "YO THAT IS AWESOME" but once that appeal wears off it is supposed to make you worried, uncomfortable and scared about where we as a society could be going with the way technology advances
This means that when a person that isn't the typical big bad evil guy, does something bad, it does not mean CDPR condones the behavior or even wishes to glorify it. It is simply how the cyberpunk universe has always been.
People are so used to these world's where it is good versus evil that the moment something like cyberpunk goes wrong where it isn't black versus white but rather nuances of grey, they automatically take it as CDPR having an agenda or are sending a message that they are not
Almost all the hot takes I have seen on Cyberpunk are people claiming that CDPR are pushing a message that they really aren't and honestly that is incredibly disheartening to see. And so now where people are finally getting hands on the game more and more of these
takes are coming out and what is even more disheartening to see is that it is turning everything into a us vs. Them scenario. You either love Cyberpunk unconditionally or you are against us. And I fucking HATE that
CDPR has dropped the ball a good few times with it's production of this game. They have pushed the game back several times, forced their employees to work under a period of crunch despite promising not to, and delayed the game after it went golden.
Yesterday I read that there is a thing in the game that could cause seizures for people with epilepsy. This is a terrible thing, and should definitely be something that could be toggled off. But because a woman pointed this out, people sent her videos disguised as support
but turned out to be filled with blinking lights, obviously there to induce epileptic seizures on the poor woman. This is so far removed from okay that it makes me sick to even think people would do this over a videogame.
Has there been some absolute DOGSHIT takes about Cyberpunk? Yes. Will we continue to see them coming? Absolutely. But is CDPR a perfect company? NO! Is Cyberpunk a perfect game? Hell no! Stop making it an us vs. Them situation, it's fucking ridiculous
In conclusion, i have never been more excited for a game than Cyberpunk. Cyberpunk has always been my favorite genre of anything and CDPR is one of my favorite game companies. It is also a game that is so unapologetically it's own beast which makes me wanna experience it more.
However, it is the same ol' point I have repeated time and time again: "The thing you love isn't perfect". And that is okay. That just means you love it despite it's flaws and should stand even more as a testament to how good the good things are. Stop pretending it is perfect.
Stop pretending no criticism is valid just cause most of the criticism that has been out there has been fucking terrible dumb stuff. Stop defending bad decisions and stop trying to silence people who may have genuine bad experiences.
Wake the fuck up, samurai.
