On a recent trip to Cirencester, I found this gravestone - spotted because it was a family with my surname. By why had 20-year-old William James Darby died at Weymouth? I went and did a bit of digging... 1/3

Poor William had gone to Weymouth for the sake of his health - but he had a fit and fell from his bathing machine into the sea, and drowned. 2/3

I wonder whether he was in the bathing machine on his own, and wasn't visible, as it sounds like there might have been a bit of delay retrieving him. But in William's case, a trip to the seaside proved not to be good for his health. 3/3
