Just like physical needs (like food and sex), we all have 6 core intellectual needs as humans.

Understand them and you'll be able to self-diagnose the problem of feeling unmotivated in your self-learning journey.

BICEPS model presents a nice framework.

// THREAD đź’Ş
B - BELONGING:

You need to know that you are an integral part of a group of any size.

Self-learning is often lonely. It's easy to get starved of this core need.

Actively seek out other people who are learning the same things.

Choose the course that has a thriving community.
I - IMPROVEMENT:

You need to know you are making improvement towards an important goal in your life.

Know what your goal is. Make sure that it's *your* goal and you're not simply imitating your peers.

And then, make sure you keep moving towards it.

Recaliberate if you're not.
C - CHOICE:

You need the right amount of choice. Too much and you get overwhelmed; too little and you feel trapped.

If you feel overwhelmed with choice, narrow your focus.

If you feel trapped, jump out of your pond and widen your gaze.
E - EQUALITY:

We need to know that there is equality and fairness in our surroundings. Or else, our mind tries to revolt and take to the streets.

You can't fix inequality yourself but you'll feel calm if you do *something* about it.

Talk to people. Start a group. Change bio.
P - PREDICTABILITY:

You need the right amt of predictability. Too predictable is boring; completely unpredictable and you feel helpless.

When things get boring - take on new challenges.

Unpredictability is when lessons feel too difficult. Make sure your foundations are strong.
S - STATUS:

We all need to know our status amongst our peers or the groups that we are a part.

Making your work and your knowledge visible helps.

- Share your knowledge
- Teach people around you
- Talk about your projects

Do them IRL.

Do them by writing articles on Internet.
Satisfying each core need gives you one point.

Ideally, you should have a 6/6 learning experience all the time.

But mostly, we don't.
Whenever you sense a problem, check your BICEPS score.

See how many of your core needs are satisfied.

Then, try to add something to earn one more point.
