Madao is a Altruist
Altruism is the principle and moral practice of concern for happiness of other human beings or animals.
Altruism is morally extremely good but financially extremely bad, which funnily enough explains majority of Madao's Character

Ep 188 or The Madao Episode in one of the best standalone eps in gintama. It Showcases Madao's Altruism and Selfless kind Nature Perfectly.
Ep 188 follows this kid named Daigoro and his journal on Madao
Ep 188 follows this kid named Daigoro and his journal on Madao
Daigoro's dad was also a Madao who left his famiily and made both Daigoro and his mom and unhappy.
Daigoro takes in Madao as a dog. eventually Madao starts helping out the family. Madao becomes a Father figure for Daigoro. The mom starts developing feelings for Madao

Madao finally decides to get a job to help out his new family. At the Interview Madao meets Daigoro's dad who's trying his hardest to get this job so he can go back to his family. Madao's Altruistic Nature kicks in, causes a ruckus guaranteeing the other madao to get the job
Madao goes back to being the master of the park, to his cardboard abode creating a place in his daigoro's family for daigoro's dad to fit back in. Daigoro finds madao with tears running down his face.
Daigoro upon seeing madao utters the series' best quote "When will Madao bloom?... Madao had already bloomed long ago" which acts metaphorically comparing him to a flower but it also has philosophically importance which i will come back to later.
Another Example of Madao's Altruism is Ep 248, the Slumdog millionaire parody ep. It has this amazing story of madao befriending this girl named chiharu who wants to participate in "who wants to be a madaonaire?" so that she can pay her dad's debt off
chiharu becomes homeless due to her mom becoming sick. madao takes care of her. madao becomes chiharu's father figure.
"We might live in a cardboard house, but i'm having a lot of fun right now. This is the first time I've felt at home." These words from chiharu makes me super happy. but this is not forever. chiharu's father returns and so do the debt collectors.
Madao takes responsibility of the debt. Madao enters "Who wants to be a Madaonaire" in order to pay someone else's debt. He suffered beating and humiliation for someone else's peace and happiness.
Existentialism
a philosophical theory or approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will.
a philosophical theory or approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will.
Madao is also an existentialist. he is of the firm belief that people should create their own values and beliefs, independent of human society’s moralities and standards. He may suffer the consequences but he will do what he thinks is right according to his own values.
In ep 7, Madao tired of doing dirty deeds goes against the government and quits his job. This is where he becomes a existentialist by looking at gintoki's drive to protect his friends and Gintoki's ability to do whatever he wants to according to his own ideals.
Ep 7 is where imo Madao blooms, where he becomes a samurai (metaphorically). Granted his life becomes absolutely miserable but he has the strength to survive due to his existentialist nature. as a joke madao is seen attempting suicide multiple times throughout the series-
but he fails every time somehow. if he actually wanted to he could but it stands against his philosophy of existentialism. if he kills himself then it means he lost to the situation surrounding him and it would mean that he would have not emphasized his own existence and gave in-
to the essence of the situation. It would mean that he lost to Society's standards. Madao is a strong person. He is a strong person who survives against all the despair and hopelessness he faces and never gives up. He is a person who helps others regardless of himself.
Madao is a Humorous commentary on life itself, About the hard ships we face, the despair of society, the hopelessness of not being able to do anything, the selfless kind act of helping others, the power to not give up, the power to not give in to the situation.
Madao character is a message i feel. A message of hope to not give up. a message to be more selfless and kind, not to madao's extreme of course. a message to survive the hardships we all face. a message to surround yourself with those closer than family
i may use all these words and do all the mental gymnastics to explain how madao is a beautiful character philosophically, but all i have to say is madao is a selfless, kind and genuinely a good guy.
In this series filled with Toilet Humor, Hemorrhoids, Gorillas, Censored Dicks, Space Battles, Samurais, and many more, filled to the brim with lovable characters,
