Quite some discussions going on on FT regarding RBL's shape yesterday but somehow not many have noticed the change in Man Utd's shape. I vividly remember their shape in their 5-0 win, which was a 4-4-2 Diamond to crowd out the central areas, which RBL love to utilize
Compare it to yesterday's shape: Man Utd went for a 5-3-2 shape with Bruno being more advanced in the mid-trio. Here is why it failed to work out for Utd. RBL maintained their 3-3 shape in build-up with 3 CBs and 3 CMs, making it 6 players
In their 5-0 win, Utd had 6 players of their own as you can see with 3 CMs supporting an advanced mid and 2 strikers. But as Utd shifted to a 5-2-1-2 yday, RBL had a 6v5 advantage which allowed them to progress into the final-third easier than the prev. game
Reposting the pic: Matic McTom were concerned with the constant movement from Olmo, Forsberg and they were hesitant to step out and mark Sabitzer & Nkunku. Sabitzer receives the ball from CB and then see what happens
They easily get past Utd's initial lines of pressure. Once they are in position, Olmo & Forsberg make runs in between CBs. When runs are made in between defenders, then 1 attacker can occupy 2 defenders. Which is exactly what they did and it let Angelino totally free in far side
The difference between the two games from an aerial view: It was easier for Utd to close down RBL's CMs when they received the ball from CBs as their was a '6' to exclusively to shield the defence. But here, you can see in the very first pic, Matic couldn't follow Sabitzer
