Spinal precautions- log rolling. A thread.
1.Log rolling patients with potential SCI or unstable spinal fractures is accepted as necessary practise in the acute setting but not taught in standard manual handling training programmes.
2. @UHCW_MTC , @OUhcw and @NeuroUhcw clinical leads teach logrolling to teams on the specialty wards following the MASCIP ‘Moving and Handling patients with actual or suspected SCI’ recommendations.
3. The clinician at the head end is in charge of the turn and determines the bed height. They carry out the head hold or as we refer to it ‘head lock’ (hands onto shoulders and fingers around posterior neck with forearms locking to side of head).
4. Team of three roll the body. Positioned in height order with tallest at the head end so they are able to reach across the patient’s shoulders. We use a three hand over, three hands under technique.
5. Person one (tallest) has two hands ‘over’ at shoulder and hip.
6. Person two has one hand ‘over’ at waist and one hand ‘under’ thigh.
7. Person three has two hands ‘under’ knee and ankle.
8. Person in charge directs the roll with clear instructions.
9. When taught well this is a simple technique and reassuringly secure for the patient and staff involved.
@UHCW_MTC would like this to be compulsory manual handling training for all clinicians across the Trust.
