I get the energy of getting on individuals for vacationing, eating out, etc., but individual responsibility really isn’t the biggest issue. Governmental failing on a global scale is.
Yeah folks may be selfish for going out, but when people face to leave their homes anyway to work, getting mad at them for wanting a reprieve seems counterproductive. Especially when governments are keeping everything open, not proving stimulus, nor proving housing reliefs, etc.
Even on a global scale. Due to colonialism, a lot of countries rely on tourism to sustain their economies. If people don’t travel their, the locals won’t have jobs or income or be able to eat because of their government failing. This is much bigger than individual responsibility.
Getting mad at people for going to restaurants when it was restaurant owners begging the government to allow them to open back up because they were going out of business is the wrong place to place energy.
Even places that just did takeout so dramatic drops in revenue in compared to indoor seating. And the government has literally done nothing beyond initial stimulus which really didn’t help much.
I don’t agree with people going out to clubs, hosting parties, not wearing masks, not social distancing, etc. But what are you supposed to say to people who have been abandoned. “Yeah you can risk your life at work, but damn you for wanting to have fun occasionally”
It doesn’t work. Covid being out of control is government responsibility. Individuals play a role, but ultimately this is governmental failing on a global scale. Especially since we can see the difference in response from Asian countries compared to Western countries.
People in a lot of Asian countries are returning to some semblance of normalcy because their governments have implemented actual policies to help. They’re going to restaurants, stores, etc. and their cases are still staying down. This is a governmental failure.
And this isn’t even a justification. If I eat at a restaurant or travel, I take full responsibility and ownership for that and I recognize the layer of selfishness there. Even while taking precautions (frequent testing, wearing a mask, social distancing, etc). That’s what it is.
And I won’t get mad at people who call me out on it. That’s just the reality. I have gone out to eat in restaurants a few times and I do have a trip planned for next year. I own that. It is selfish to do this things, even while taking all the necessary precautions.
We have the recognize that this pandemic won’t be over anytime soon. If governments don’t start doing things to take care of their people, then individual actions really won’t matter. Majority of people can do right majority of time and people will still continue to die.
Until everything gets shut down, there’s housing security and monthly stimulus, and healthcare access GLOBALLY, this pandemic will only continue to get worse. That’s the reality.
The fact of the matter is that we’re approaching a year into this pandemic. Our government is literally doing nothing. Realistically this vaccine their cooking up now won’t be effective (there still isn’t an effective flu vaccine and it’s been almost a century).
You can’t expect people to stay home and keep up with the earlier restrictions if everything’s open. Especially for an unknown indefinite time. Yeah we’re grown, but we’re human and that’s just not realistic. Wearing masks is realistic, social distancing in places is realistic.
Expecting people to stay home and continue to pause their lives and their goals is not realistic. It’s simply not. Call it selfish (cause to an extent it is), but that’s the reality. Even countries that were doing well in the beginning have lost control again. That’s reality.
We need to work within the confines of human nature. That means forcing people to stay home through mandatory shutdowns and closures while also providing financial relief and healthcare. You have to change systems to change behavior. Gradually decreasing will power isn’t enough.
That doesn’t just apply to Corona, that applies to anything. You don’t expect an alcoholic to not drink available alcohol, you make it so that alcohol isn’t available. If you want to save money, you save it before you see it. That’s working without the confines of human nature.
