Recycling is confusing sometimes. 😤♻️

Why is this the case though? This week, we round up several things about recycling that can explain why.

https://www.biji-biji.com/4-reasons-why-recycling-is-confusing/
1, did you know that dirty plastics *can't* actually be recycled?

It's essential to avoid contamination of a batch of recyclables - any amount of contamination will render the entire batch unfit to be used to make goods 😔

Be sure to clean and dry your recyclables!!
2, only certain types of plastics are recyclable.

In Malaysia, it's only practical to recycle plastic types 1, 2 and 5 - others depend on the availability of infrastructure, facilities and a market.

Even with Beyond Bins, we only accept clean and dried Type 2 and 5 plastics.
3, the “other”, non-recyclable category that includes biodegradable plastics

Biodegradable plastic isn't necessarily better - these plastics may need other, special conditions to decompose - if it's stuck between layers of trash in the landfill it will not decompose! 😭
4, recycling labels can mislead

Consumers may misinterpret the ‘chasing arrows’ symbol to mean recyclability or recycled content in the product. ( https://www.oneplanetnetwork.org/sites/default/files/unep_ci_2020_can_i_recycle_this.pdf)

This may lead to more contamination of the recycling stream and undermine consumer confidence in recycling
We still need to recycle, though - it's still relevant and important.

And we're here to remind you that every small consideration, extra effort, and mindfulness will go a long way - it's for our planet, after all 🌍✨
