I know how much Disabled folks are hated within Planning & Engineering ‘cos when I worked at one city that codified within their strategic plan “Disability Justice,” & I championed using a Disability Justice lens on projects I was told to “curb my enthusiasm for accessibility.” https://twitter.com/bambinoir/status/1336537819771236352
Recently at a housing event Planners & engineers responded to a question asked about considering energy efficiency & adaptable and accessible housing standards as supportive goals rather than competing climate goals and was told “there was very limited need for adaptive housing.”
When I say the Disabled poor community is probably the most hated community, I mean that shit. This hatred shows up as dismissive, negligent, as false arguments about “family-friendly housing standards,” being in conflict with accessibility goals. And most dangerously in #BillC7
Planners believe that they are noble & creative for preserving dilapidated buildings from the late 1800’s because some white settler built it, than they are with making that same home accessible and adaptable for the largest marginalized members of our communities. Shit field!
The point is that even when a “progressive city council,” ensures 1 of their strategic goals is Disability Justice in projects, a non-progressive city staff (for ex in Planning & Engineering depts) can flex the power they have to find ways to discriminate against Disabled people.
The expediting of #BillC7 & the targeting of Disabled ppl specifically due to systemic ableism, incl attitudes within this field that teach that Disabled ppl are an inconvenience & work on projects that argue that Disabled ppl are an inconvenience is part of this harm #KillBillC7
