This is supposed to be an MDZS twitter! oh well maybe someone'll use it in a pirate AU. The story of some clocks, and also one reason why land sometimes appears out of nowhere and hits ships. https://twitter.com/drdulosis/status/1336525728343420928
disclaimers: i'm working from rusty memory and this story is about european navigation in the 1700's. i'd love to hear how other nautical traditions across the world advanced their celestial navigation!
So! people have been traveling around for a long time and wanting to know where they'd wandered off to. this is a particular problem at sea because you can't just ask a local or look for a weird-looking mountain or something.
But people are smart and figured out a lot of this really early on. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The north star is a thing. Also, compasses are a thing.
