I am opposed to what the NDP is calling a wealth tax. I consider it immoral, bordering on obscene.

If a person has acquired things and has followed every rule and law in doing so, I believe that it is criminal for the state to come along and seize it.
I supported one such law (gun law) that did this because I reasoned that the greater good was solved by a relatively minor incursion into one's right to own property. I put it in the "leaded gas" column and moved along.
It was a case of feelings over facts but I felt it could be justified and argued for the law despite believing it would not actually do anything beyond make people *feel* safer. People feeling safer better is a legitimate aspect of a healthy society. So fine.
But coming along to take away people's legally owned and acquired property is not okay.

Progressively tax the living hell out of income? Absolutely?

Fix labour laws so more of the money goes to people? Yep.
Fix corporate tax laws? Oh yes please.

Make sure Canadians get more of their own resource revenue? Right now.

Make pensions and unions mandatory? Kind of a wet dream for me.
Get enough of Canada's wealth to ensure a minimum standard of life and education and healthcare for everyone? Uh huh.

All this.

But not by stealing things from people for the quick fix.
In union negotiating it is understood that one does not make George, the old guy who always got the car allowance, lose his car allowance - they just don't let anyone else have one.

It's called grandfathering. It's honourable,

And the people who invented the NDP invented it.
This cash grab under the guise of "helping pay for the pandemic" and spouting of statistics about the wealth inequity in this country makes me angry.

The system is broken. It will take work and cooperation to fix it. And time. And yes, the wealthy should pay their fair share.
Of their income.

But we shouldn't applaud being the sort of society that just willy nilly changes rules retroactively and comes into your house and takes the paintings off the walls to share with the masses. Sorry. I don't like the smell of that.
None of this should be construed as defending obscene wealth. It's gross. Our rules are gross. Our system stinks.

Maybe even most of the really wealthy people are gross. I don't know.

But we can't just throw in a "wealth tax". That's stupid.
