So something I love to think about that helps me get through winter is how because of our tilt and location in the galaxy, during the winter months the northern hemisphere faces out away from the center of the Milky Way
During Summer we face our galactic core which is why the night sky is brighter-it is full of more starlight. But in winter when we look up, we’re peering through some of our galaxies arm, where we live
But the rest of what we’re seeing is the void of space, it’s the darkness of the unknown. Your winter skies are darker and more clear because you’re seeing fewer stars, but what else are you seeing?
There are billions of galaxies hidden also behind the core of the Milky Way, but it’s easier to imagine when you look up and are faced with less. Knowing as you’re looking up, we are turning back towards the center of the galaxy and towards the light of Summer.
This is what you’re looking at even if you can’t see it https://twitter.com/mcnees/status/1242900559637733376
This is also a big reason why astronomers take to the telescopes in winter-less starlight means more vision and chances of discovery. Curious if we started to think of our own winters that way. Maybe there is always more hidden in the dark for ourselves than we think.
Anyway, happy almost solstice everyone!
Ok but for real our home is a stunner https://twitter.com/frozen/status/1336536822797664257
