Quick tip for people working on CS PhD applications rn: when I was doing admissions at CMU, we cared more about whether 1) the statement conveys you know what research is and 2) you can tell a story about why you should be doing research than the specific research topic.
Related, startup hiring would be so much easier if there were an equivalent to the PhD statement of purpose. "Does this person know what it means to do exploratory work" and "can this person tell a story about something that might not exist yet" are the two main traits I want.
