How to differentiate if a stage is live or if it’s a AR stage and it’s being lip synced

What is lip syncing?
Lip syncing is when someone move the lips silently in synchronization with a prerecorded track.
to talk about lip syncing in kpop is not as simple since not always everyone fully sings live and it’s understandable -

remember the vocal chords are a muscle and as everything human it can get tired and not be in optimal condition all time, kpop idols also dance making it difficult to sing perfectly and dance at the same time but it’s not impossible to do
they key to sound good while dancing is stamina, stamina is what you need to sound stable, being able to control how you breathe and knowing how to control your voice
now that we got the basics covered let me teach you what you need to know to notice if someone is singing live!!

this is going to be kpop focused but it can apply to every industry btw
we have different types of “lip syncing “
-AR
-MR

AR(All Recorded)
AR not only contains the sound of instrumental accompaniment but also contains the sound of singer’s voice. So basically the studio track that you can hear in the album, the artist is pretending to sing live. This one is super easy to notice

but let’s not be harsh, sometimes the circumstances may push some groups to do this, not an ability for a good sound system the artist being tired and choosing to not exhaust their voices or even the correct equipment to even be able to sing live (not having mics etc)
LAR(Live All Recorded)
Ok this is a tricky one and the one i hate the most, it means that is the same as AR but gives the illusion of live vocals, contains the instrumental accompaniment and the singer’s voice but also the sound of singer’s labored breathing.

This one is difficult to notice but here’s so tips to know if those breathing sounds are live or pre-recorded.
- The track sounds flat: This one is so much easier to notice live but when you sing the sound the mic receives should come out from a different canal than the track //

you can notice trough your headphones a little disjoint-in the sound and the voice like maybe a tiny echo or vibration OVER the music, it’s difficult to explain but listen to the video in the tweet above and the one on this tweet
you can notice that both sound “live” but in the first example besides the obvious mistake you can see that their movements can seem over exaggerated or the opposite their mouths seem to be more closed and the track has the same volume all the time
Also you can catch a group that uses LAR constantly is when their live stages always sound the same, the same breathing at the same time, the same “hey” or adlib in every performance
in the second video their movements match better with what their voices are doing and you can hear the variation when everyone sings together and if you pay close attention you can feel that little separation i’m talking about, i feel this is a clear example
MR(Music Recorded)
MR means instrumental accompaniment. But in kpop world there’s no one that uses just the music instrumental, 100% of the times a backing track is included maybe in some parts like choruses adlibs or parts where the singer needs a breathing break

Why do they do this kind of thing? Because it can make their live singing sound better!!
And when you are a kpop idol and dance at the same time you want to give the best performance you can

LMR(Live Music Recorded)
LMR includes some parts which sound just like ordinary MR. So, singing to LMR means that they sing live parts of their songs and others are pre-recorded, this one is used mostly on music shows since they have crazy recordings schedules

Why MR removed videos aren’t helpful?
MR removed videos only eliminate the music track but as we saw if the idol group is using LMR or LAR lowering the music volume is kinda useless because the voices will be heard stable even if they are pre-recorded so don’t trust this videos

I hope this thread was helpful, in my opinion i don’t care if idols lipsync occasionally they are human and with their crazy schedules singing live all the time can be harmful to their voice specially if they don’t have a right technique.
There’s instances where lip syncing shouldn’t be allowed, like concerts, award shows or really important performances, i also don’t want to drag anyone, i like all the groups i used as example and all of them have done each one of this things in their career
Hope you learn something new and the next time you know what type of performance you are watching
