This from @mudede is right, seeing this as an outcome of the contradictions of neoliberal urbanism. 1/x https://twitter.com/TheStranger/status/1336475617907208193
The neolibs and corporate allies believe they have a natural right to rule. The voters disagree. Sometimes Chamber finds a candidate who sounds progressive enough to win. But in office that candidate doesn’t deliver what people want because it requires offending the Chamber. 2/x
Or the candidate does what voters want, offending the Chamber, who turn on them and find someone new. But the cycle continues, as neolibs cannot accept they have no base and their policies are widely hated. 3/x
Sometimes a progressive breaks through and wins, as @mayormcginn did in 2009. But then the corporate elite go all out to oust them, even though they’re actually good for business. (As McGinn was.) But biz wants power above all else, even above profits. 4/x
Seattle will have a succession of mayors until a progressive wins and governs in the public interest and against corporations and neoliberalism. This is what the voters want. And in 2021 there’s a chance we will make it happen. 5/x
We just need to be prepared for the neolibs and corporate allies to decide to go around Seattle democracy, using the courts and the legislature to overturn the results of an election and undermine the will of the people. 6/6
