How can we leverage our technology to do some of the hard work for us? Like using @Mentimeter to poll our learners and automatically create a word cloud #VSTE20
Much of the research/planning of blended learning is grounded in the community of inquiry, positioning the student as an active and engaged participant. #VSTE20
Social presence - safety, connection and willingness to share. Cognitive - testing and constructing meaning, with each other and the world #VSTE20
Teaching presence: we design the experience and want students to make the meaning/do the work in that experience. This is taking SO MUCH TIME right now. We also bring in our content knowledge and our facilitation/coaching students. How do you make time/energy for all 3? #VSTE20
As we design experiences it's INCREDIBLY important to decide which kind of learning. If we want learners to have more control over pace, place, path and time, then choose asynchronous. Consider online discussions (video or text) to share ideas and practice explaining #VSTE20
Synchronous is really incredibly important to support students while they practice, build relationships, providing feedback, and collaboration #VSTE20
Don't do it all at once! Change one thing at a time... Use familiar content with a new tool/strategy. Use a familiar strategy/tool with new content! #VSTE20
It's unrealistic to think that this will be the same cognitive load as we had pre-pandemic. #VSTE20
As a content instructor - what do we do live vs recording? Guiding thought - if it's interactive and we want the routine/experience then do this synchronously. Things we would say the same class to class...then record it. Leverage the way kids learn from video IRL #VSTE20
As a facilitator/coach, help our learners develop "metacognitive muscles" and provide feedback. Use this time PS - I love this description! #VSTE20 And this sounds very much like #fcpsPOG Ss perceive Audio/Video feedback as more motivating/personal/specific!
Don't overlook asking our learners for feedback. We are learning so much as we go... how can we honor their experience #vste20
Grateful for this opportunity to learn from @Catlin_Tucker tonight - an interactive virtual session. Feeling heard with this latest question! #VSTE20
Remember that we are in uncharted territory with this concurrent instruction model, there isn't much (at all) research in K12. Blended learning can help us in this situation #VSTE20
When we have too much control, tight grip on all things in our classroom, it can actually have a negative impact on learners' motivation! #VSTE20
Challenge 1 - How to keep everyone engaged. Interactive agenda with videos and directions learners know to find. Begin/end class with routine! **Teachers shouldn't be the only ones thinking critically about learners' work - goal setting and self assessment #VSTE20
Challenge 2 - inequality of teacher attention/time. Put the questions in ONE place for online/in person (or ask each other). Rethink station rotation: it's not a physical space...it's an activity/group. Can we build in social time for our students to connect? #VSTE20
Spend time planning the teacher led station. Most bang for your buck here! 5 ideas and spend time considering differentiation. THIS is where you start. Plan this first!! Start your teacher led station with the online students first. THEN flop to 2nd station #VSTE20
Challenge 3 - students disengaged. Consider choices to students. Choice board with "stretch" color coded choices that are built with activities to practice skills/content. 2nd station can be from the choice board over the course of a week/unit/ #VSTE20
Challenge 4 - not enough time connecting with our learners. Playlist model is a sequence of individual learning experiences, like individual rotation that gives kids a high degree of control over pace and path. Variations. Build in a way for learners to check in with T #VSTE20
Don't try to personalize EVERY playlist. Start with 2 or 3 levels. After each teacher check in (tucker time) then a personalized focus determined by the teacher & learner. This takes a lot of prep at the start, but has time for personalization and check with learners #VSTE20
As we coach Ts to start this work we have to work on our mindsets. Do we VALUE equally our role as content expert AND facilitator? What do we bring to our students? How might we let go of ONLY valuing the content expert? That will allow us to figure this out together #VSTE20
Getting started - we are all learning and starting somewhere. We don't have this figured out. Focus on what's important - student centered and relationship focused! #VSTE20
How can we communicate with parents about concurrent? More channels of communication, engage parents as a learning coach at home. Explaining the WHY is as important as our WHAT we're doing #VSTE20
Be thoughtful about the "Oprah Winfrey approach" to points/assignments. In this moment, be VERY thoughtful about what we are assessing & assigning to make this not about completing work to earn points, but to meet learning goals we build understanding of learning vs. game #VSTE20
Again - very grateful to @Catlin_Tucker for all she is sharing tonight (and always). Check out her books (let me know if you want to borrow. I have them all) and her blog. She's very receptive on Twitter too! #VSTE20
