Hello and welcome to #MuseumsUnlocked day 128 (9th December) and our focus today is on DISABILITY. I am so excited to be taking part in this co-curation between @MuseumsUnlocked and @LeicsMusStud doctoral students. My PhD research examines how museums show disability. 1/6
There are an estimated 14.1 million disabled people in the UK, and one billion in the world, of which I am one. Disabled people have been creators, artists, inventors and storytellers, contributing to art, science and culture across time and place. #MuseumsUnlocked 2/6
The @sciencemuseum's new Medicine Galleries feature a range of objects linked to disability, such as these prosthetic legs created for Tracey Baynam, showing her development from a child to woman, complete with high heels. https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co8594793/pair-of-prosthetic-limbs-for-thalidomide-affected-9-year-old-child-prostheses #MuseumsUnlocked 3/6
These beautiful Christmassy carol-singing cats were drawn by Louis Wain, an artist known for his drawings of anthropomorphic cats, who spent time @bethlemmuseum, creating such images throughout his life, one of many artists who spent time in the institution. #MuseumsUnlocked 4/6
25 years ago the Disability Discrimination Act was brought into law, thanks in part to the protests commemorated in @ShapeArts National Disability Arts Collection and Archive, some of which are shown in this image below. https://the-ndaca.org/ #MuseumsUnlocked 5/6
Stories around disability are found everywhere, but are often overlooked. What are your favourite museum objects and stories linked to DISABILITY? For day 128 we are asking you to share these with us. I can’t wait to see what you all come up with! #MuseumsUnlocked 6/6
