Biden announced he intends to appoint former US Rep Xavier Becerra to HHS. I’ve been seeing him lauded as a single payer supporter, so I decided to look into it. Let’s look at his FEC filings. Sorry, no map today!
His FEC filings are from 2003-2016; in that time he received over $200,000 from pharma and insurance companies. Who gave the most? Pharma company Eli Lilly. Also notable are the large amount of contributions from health insurance lobbyist AHIP, who gave in 8 years from 2006-2016.
After his US Rep term, he became Attorney General of California. His campaign finance tells a similar story. You can search this data on the California Secretary of State website, found here: http://powersearch.sos.ca.gov/advanced.php
From 2017 until now, he has received more than $63,000 in contributions from mostly insurance companies. The largest contributor is Blue Shield, who gave almost half of his total contributions.
It’s important to know that a politician’s rhetoric and their contributions often tell opposing tales. I don’t think for a second that he truly supports single payer healthcare - especially not when the largest insurance lobbying firm in the country has financially supported him.
