An increasing number of @cityoftoronto Councillors have joined others who've been long-time advocates for separated bike lanes. What's frustrating are those who'd rather stick to ineffective half-measures that are actually more dangerous for cyclists (paint-only lanes) or /1
those who remain against any new bike infrastructure as a means to declare their allegiances in the factitious but politically convenient "war on the car". /2
Further, it's unacceptable when cyclists and local Councillors are repeatedly calling for safe bike infrastructure only to be met with a "can't be done" by @TO_Transport. The College St. painted bike lanes comes first to mind. /3
When two whole lanes can be requisitioned for patios within days, it's slap in the face for every cyclist fenced in by passing cars while squeezing between a parked car and moving streetcar everyday on their commute /4
Out of deep respect to the Amaro family, we don't want make her out as a martyr. But there will be more deaths and life-changing injuries in the days/weeks/months to come. More ghost bike memorials. Many will be preventable. /5
And the blood split will squarely be in the hands of the naysayers at city hall. Enough with the #VisionZero or #ActiveTO rebrands. We cannot allow this to remain the norm, nor should we have to wait until the 2022 municipal elections for meaningful change. /6
