IS God Moral? A thread.
The content of this thread is inspired by my reading of godless by Dan Baker.
NB some phrases are picked directly from the book. https://twitter.com/Baabatay/status/1336412178094632961
Should a Christian ask if God is moral? If they claim that God is the source of morality. That would be like asking if goodness is good. A needlessly stupid question if you ask me. To ask if God or the bible is moral (with a possible negative answer) is to assume that “moral”
” means something apart from God and that we already know what it means independently of the bible. If the word “moral” has meaning by itself, then right and wrong can be understood apart from God, and judging the morality of God
puts him under the jurisdiction of a higher level of criticism. This is true even if the judgment is favorable
The word moral appears nowhere in the bible, the bible uses phrases like “to do right”, but is usually followed by “in the sight of the lord” (Deut 6:18). To do right in your own eyes is considered evil.
For example, Proverbs 16:25 says, “There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
Now get this Irony. The first time “do right” is used in the bible, it was used by Abraham when he questioned the morality of God. Abraham argued with God about slaughtering the inhabitants of Sodom
Genesis 18:25 “That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked; and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee; shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
In other words, Abraham said to God, “Don’t do that, it’s not right.” E shock you abi?
Let’s move. Imagine you caught a thief and you asked him, what made you steal and he replies by saying “the Devil made me do it” Do you think the police will let the guy go? But check out God
in Job 2:3 Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause
In other words,
Me - God what made you destroy Job?
God – The Devil made me do it.
This last one is such glaring hypocrisy of God I love so much. God inspired Paul to write in Ephesians 4:26 "In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
But check this out In 2 Samuel 24:1 and again the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
Thing is God had commanded that there should not be a census in Israel, so by inciting them to count themselves he was setting them up to be massacred. And so it was. By verse 15 of the chapter (you should read the entire chapter), So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel
from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.
God killed 70k people why? Because he was angry and incited them to sin against him.
It is like that father that tells you don’t smoke but he’s smoking as he’s telling you.
