I didn't think I'd actually have to say this but apparently its a subject of debate now: There would be no Armenian people or culture if it wasn't for the Church or the Armenian connection to Christianity.
The Armenian language was created as a way for the Armenian to get closer to God so they may stop worshipping in foreign languages.
The Mekhitarist Order (yes, I know they're Catholic but it is an Armenian Benedictine order) is responsible for the translation and creation of countless texts in Armenian. They are credited by some as being the backbone of the Armenian awakening.
And for those who think Christianity made Armenians docile, there are countless examples of Armenian religious leaders advocating for independence and/or self-defense. Moreover, Christianity made many other peoples conquerors, so maybe it's not Christianity?
"But! But! Even Raffi wrote against the Church!"
Yes, I know what passage you're talking about. Have you read anything else Raffi has written about the church or its leaders? He wasn't against the Church, he was against misuse of the Church's potential.
Khrimian Hayrig. That's all I think I have to say for that point.
I could go on, but will stop here. You may criticize certain figures, there are some worthy of that criticism, but to claim the Church is anything but a boon to the Armenian people demonstrates a clear ignorance of our history.
