1/3 General Austin is highly credentialed and likely will do a fine job leading DoD. It is fantastic and overdue that he will be the first Black person in the role.
But in addition to the civ/mil concerns @brooks_rosa, raises and the unique, incredible qualifications of Flournoy
2/3 there are 2 other factors to consider in not choosing her: 1/ the military has an ongoing, tremendous, dangerous problem with women as today’s headlines again show. Efforts to fix have clearly not been adequate. A woman at top could have helped to signal a historic shift
3/3. Pres elect Biden pledged to strive for gender parity in his senior nat sec appointments per @lc_wins. I’m counting 2 of 9 Cabinet picks so far with 2 to go—CIA & USAID. Plus USUN & DNI are 100% critical jobs but not as powerful as DoD, State, NSA & CIA. So hoping for more..
