San Mateo County BoS is hearing a proposal to use Project Homekey funds to acquire a 52 room hotel in downtown Half Moon Bay to house homeless residents, and people are *pissed*
"We are not against housing the homeless, we're against you forsaking our quality of life for something (COVID) that will be over soon." - Resident Vic Borelli
Borelli: "if you don't oppose the sale, we will oppose you. We will become politically active and replace you."
I missed the first speaker's name, who opposed housing the homeless on the basis that the project was "downtown" and too close to schools.
Kelsey Banes of @penforeveryone here speaking in support, thanks supes and staff, says housing is fundamental to quality of life. Urges support of the project.
Resident Carlysle Ann Young: "I know that you're on a whirlwind hotel buying spree, but you need to do your due diligence," wants to make sure we're getting the best value here, thinks this is too rushed 🙄
Gina Beyries: thousands of taxpaying residents do not agree, the city is "romancing saviorism" of homelessness, claims that the majority prefer the streets and RVs, I speak from experience, not virtue signaling. "My rights matter!" 🤮
Next is 25 year resident Kerry Macintosh: opposes, worried that homeless from Pacifica will be moved to HMB. If a resident overdoses and dies, or harms a child, we'd be liable. You're buying lawsuits. Please vote no.
Maureen Fleming: opposes project. Action is shortsighted and ill-conceived. HMB is rural, the homeless, the mentally-ill, and others who engage in "anti-social" behaviors should be housed elsewhere. This project reminds me of the projects of NYC and Chicago. 🤮🤮🤮
Suzanne Moore, absolute queen: thanks supes for approving previous projects. As a retired nurse, understands how important housing is to health. Urges county to support and invest in this project.
Marcia Murphy: lives in Pacifica, supports efforts to house our homeless residents. Thanks board for their compassion.
Joanne Rokosky: in strong support of hotel purchase! Providing transitional housing gives them security, incredibly important during pandemic. This is the moral, compassionate choice. This is an ideal location, with nearby services. Please approve this project!
Linda Mendiola: strongly supports this! Would also have supported another hotel location in Miramar, her home. Says neighbors like to talk about what a kind, small-town community they have. Asks whether that's really what they have. If so, support this!
Linda continues: others are mad about the timeline, but I'm glad there's a hard deadline! I've seen what happens with projects like this, affordable housing, that gets strung out forever. Please support it!
Laura Heinz from Housing For All Burlingame and @DSA_Peninsula is here! Strongly supports this project to house homeless coastside residents, urges even more projects, also supports projects in Burlingame. Please continue to prioritize our most vulnerable.
Next is Ellen H., a Pacifica resident since 1974. Strongly in support; overjoyed to see this. Our houseless need our support and will greatly benefit from it. We cannot turn away and ignore the increasing suffering in our communities. This is how I want my taxes used!
Carolyn Jaramillo of Pacifica Housing for All: it is a moral responsibility for me to speak up hearing others spread dehumanizing stereotypes about the homeless. Please provide as many rooms on the coastside for our unhoused residents as possible.
Resident Elena is opposed to this project. Doesn't want mentally ill people near her. It's too close to residences and schools. There's no fence or security. Save our open space. Claims Nextdoor and petitions show 60% of community opposes. 🤮
Hey, it's @_kueller! They say that our houseless neighbors aren't monsters, they're human beings, and they need shelter. This is basic solidary, I support it and all projects like it, please move it forward.
Clerk of the Board is now reading emails, one of which asks "what problem are you trying to solve" by housing the homeless.

Incredible.
Hey, looks like @samdman95 got an email in! Says that projects like this are necessary to provide immediate relief to get our houseless neighbors off the streets and into shelter.
Last comment is from Dan Barnard, who strongly opposes. Wants community involvement, not enough time to comment/share input, need to talk about impacts on traffic, to homeowners. Says this is "a money grab."
