Before COVID hit, Ohio St was my pick to win it all. The Buckeyes are an unquestionably talented team. But even if they play/win B1G champ game, they’ll be 6-0 w/2 wins vs winning opponents (Indiana & NW) & those winning opps will have 1 win vs winning opp (NW by 1 vs Iowa).
Again, I won’t argue against Ohio State being 1 of the 4 best teams… but they didn’t need to play a single game for us to say that. Meanwhile, A&M, Florida and Cincy have all played more games, been tested more often and have better wins.
And while Ohio State being great in 2019 & predicted to be great in 2020 is a good rationale — i.e. the eye test — the preseason poll also had LSU, Penn St, Oregon, Auburn, Michigan, Minn and Tenn in the top 25. We’re wrong about these things a lot.
So I’m not so much arguing that Ohio State *shouldn’t* get a shot at winning the national championship, but if you want to argue the playoff makes the regular season irrelevant, this is Exhibit A. The season did not matter at all.
