Currently in a digital conference. A speaker mentioned that we need to make diversity and inclusion pillars of our work places because diversity programs and initiatives have a common thread - they phase out.
I personally have become frustrated with the same conversation in games. There's a lot of desire but not as much intentional action. Change comes when we do the necessary work with purpose to make it happen. I do believe that programs and initiatives are critical start points.
However, we need actionable steps. What comes after diversity initiatives/programs? When we get more diverse creators in games, how will we elevate them to leadership positions? How will it tie back to younger people so that they are inspired to follow similar paths?
From all this, I have come to a thought and that is that in games specifically, we have been focusing on diversity and inclusion but we've been disregarding equity. I think that bringing focus on equity will be the catalyst to changes we've been wanting to see.
Equity will make people recognize barriers and acknowledge disparities so that there's commitment to correct and address imbalances. This is what we are missing. Solutions to tough problems that will be the life changing pivots for the future of our industry.
