A bit about my experience getting the COVID-19 vaccine (and living with HIV)

I’m part of group 12 (I think) which covers people living with HIV on the Oxford trial. No placebos only the real deal for a group of people living with HIV.
Amazing care and staff at the HIV clinic at St Mary’s Hospital @MFT_SMH @JefferissWing . Organised, clear, concise and reassuring. Special thanks to Helen ;)
I made the decision after discussing and being reassured by my HIV clinician at Mortimer Market @MMC_cnwl @drlaurajwaters.
A few things that help ME join: a) knowing that HIV professionals would look after me. b) being undetectable, feeling healthy and knowing my HIV is controlled and my immune system strong.
c) getting and excuse to cycle from Kennington to Paddington. d) thinking about hugging my family without over worrying when I next visit home.
e) worrying that the vaccine may not be offered, free or accessible to me (e.g. for being a migrant maybe?). f) being Colombian and having lived with HIV for about 12 years I’m very used to getting many vaccines (you name it!).
I don’t like or engage with vaccine conspiracy theories, but respect A LOT vaccine hesitation. I’ve read about the history of inoculation and vaccination, and I have concerns about unequal access to healthcare and profits by monopolies running health patents.
Some of my concerns included: a) being a brown man reaching my mid 30s. b) getting an allergic reaction. c) becoming seriously unwell. d) taking a prevention option from someone that might need it more than I do. e) overall effectiveness of the vaccine
I’m happy about my decision. I don’t feel much safer or like going into a big crowd just now. But there is some peace of mind and I haven’t had major issues.
In MY case some of the MILD symptoms/side effects the day after the jab include: headache, dizziness and nausea. The arm from the jab feels sore the day after and MY marks have stayed with me a couple of days and disappear.
I’ve now have the two dosis, and just waiting for two more follow ups and more bloods taken. The blood process has been
. But no trial, no bloods. So all good for others.

This is just my experience and only you know what’s best for you. I would definitely say it’s worth it, but weight your worries and your gains.
