Dear @Transition46,

I have been watching round table discussions held by americans of color for the past few days. As someone who considers themselves “woke” I thought I understood the needs of the black community. I didn’t. There is one thing out of all that I have learned....
.... that resonated with me the most. Within a hugely complicated situation there is one thing that would be the biggest beginning of the correct conversation. An Apology to Black America. A formal apology for slavery and for racial injustice has never happened....
.... on behalf of our nation. In 1993 congress dedicated an entire resolution to apologizing to the Hawaiian people for the over throwing of their nation. In 2009 they threw a small and relatively unacknowledged apology to indigenous Americans in an appropriations bill ....
.... between sections on military appropriation they threw in Section 8113: "Apology to Native Peoples of the United States."

“The United States, acting through Congress, apologizes on behalf of the people of the United States to all Native Peoples for the many instances ....
.... of violence, maltreatment, and neglect inflicted on Native Peoples by citizens of the United States;" and "expresses its regret for the ramifications of former wrongs and its commitment to build on the positive relationships of the past and present to move toward ....
.... a brighter future where all the people of this land live reconciled as brothers and sisters, and harmoniously steward and protect this land together." This apology was not done appropriately but it was done. This has not been done for the ancestors of slaves....
The coming years are expected, in fact demanded, to be the years that we look at racial inequality in this country and make real change. I would love to see @JoeBiden do this in his inaugural address, followed by an executive order apologizing and acknowledging...
.... and in turn congress passing a Bill formally apologizing to BIPOC Black, Indigenous, and people of color. Specifically apologizing for slavery, Jim Crow and the system of inequality that has caused us to get to this place. This would be an amazing stepping stone ....
.... towards a beginning of the real work that needs to be done, in government and our communities. Let’s do this right, let’s get it done, and let’s be the american we know we are capable of being. But start at the beginning, create a line.
