Thread: There's been a whole lot of discourse the past few days about Sauchiehall Wood, an area of disused land which the council has proposed becomes a community park.
These plans have been consulted on for years with residents and the local council alike. @GDCC_ is an excellent resource, they've posted about it today if you search their tweets.
There's a new pressure group, backed by local Tories, which claims that this Wood which didn't even have a name last week is of vital importance. So I went up there to see what the fuss was about.
To get there you have to walk, drive or cycle along Russell Road. It's an industrial area with a narrow pathway and no provision for cycling away from traffic, which is frequently in excess of the speed limit.
As you turn right into the industrial estate, there's an unmarked gate. Is it private? Who knows. Is it usually locked? Yes. Turns out this is it! Let's have a look inside.
Not a great start. It's dark, steep, muddy and full of thorns. My pup didn't like it much.
Once you're up the steep slope, it opens out. There's a small clearing! Lovely.
Now that I'm 20 yards in... Dead end. Japanese Knotwood.
Back we go along Russell Road
The council wants to use this space for kids and adults alike in Gorgie. They want to make it accessible and improve the variance of the plant life there for us all to enjoy. It will be part of a safe link between the north and south and west of the city.
They're going to plant nearly 5000 trees.
It has a 95% approval rate.
Now help me and my neighbours understand, who would oppose this?

If you support this, please let @Edinburgh_CC and @lmacinnessnp know. Tell our local councillors too @ashleyannotate @GDCC_.
TL:DR - good trees bad because bikes and you should read beyond the headline on the @edinburghpaper
The response to this has been universally positive and it has reached some 20k people! It really shows how much this is needed in our area. There's will from the community and support across Edinburgh society. Let's get going @lmacinnessnp, it's a brilliant plan.
