THE GENIUS OF POWER BY KANYE WEST.
“Power” might be the most “Kanye” song ever made. It’s Kanye’s claim at being the greatest pop icon while dealing with the issues that come with it.
“Power” samples “Afromerica,” “21st Century Schizoid Man” and “It’s Your Thing.” These samples were chosen strategically to fit the song. “Afromerica” looks at the issues faced by the black commmunity in America while “21st Century Schizoid Man” questions those in power.
Like the samples, Kanye questions the authority given to the people “above,” and celebrities as a whole. Ironically, he also claims that he is worthy of this same power.
There are two halves to this song. In the first half, Kanye goes at his critics and the system. He acts as a hero who has to guide us. In the second half, we see Kanye question what he has and the emptiness of his riches. This ends with him contemplating suicide.
In the first verse, Kanye comes for his critics. He also looks at society and some of the issues with it. To survive this broken world, Kanye must use his talent and ego. This is the end of the first half.
In the second verse and second half of the song, trying to survive off his ego, Kanye then begins to splurge in materialistic things. He’s seeing the emptiness of the things he’s bought and how all of this is killing his “inner child” and creativity.
In the third verse, we see Kanye take a dark turn. The criticism is getting to him. The world sees him as a villain. He starts to feel lonely, uses alcohol to ease the pain and starts to fantasize his death by jumping off a window. He asks “You got the power to let power go?”
All in all, with the iconic production, a theme that will forever be relevant to society and some of Kanye’s best song writing, this song is truly a masterpiece. The 5,000 hours spent on making this song are clear, it’s perfect to the last detail.
