Coaches: Are you switching more in man D? Are you teaching switching? Do your players know what a “quality switch” is? Are you keeping that stat? Are you “switching out of convenience” or are you “switching to deny?” On off ball switches, are you maintaining help side integrity?
First two weeks of preseason practice, we played straight up man-to-man. When we added switching, we used the same screening drills but taught players to “Talk, Touch, Take” to eliminate slip screens. “Switch Equals” & “Switch to Deny” to eliminate scoring plays.
Most of our switching was scouting report-related. We anticipated scoring plays & utilized “switching to deny,” making the offense catch outside their “scoring comfort zone.” Switching also allowed us to keep pressure on the ball. But, must be practiced.
Switching can be effective vs. teams who do not adjust. The downside of switching is you can often “switch yourself into a bad matchup.” Also, it can hurt you on the defensive glass. This will be exploited by well coached offenses. Be ready to “adjust to the adjustments.”
