I was thinking about the major differences between the liberalism of Mises & J.S. Mill & that much of what's wrong with modern liberalism was present in Mill's thought. Private property - which Mill disregarded - was Mises' starting point & Mises supported social norms as a

1/3
way to restrain behavior. Instead of a civilizing force, Mill viewed social ostracism as a greater threat to liberty than the state & Mill emphasized "experiments of living." Moreover, Mill was an egalitarian while Mises viewed egalitarianism as contrary to nature & thus

2/3
destructive of liberty. Finally, Mill advocated economic intervention, redistribution & "scientific" public administrators & planners, all of which have come to define modern liberalism.
