Real question I'm grappling w/ as I work on research project examining impact of media on victims/survivors: Why is it that so many victim service providers in aftermath of trauma are UNPAID VOLUNTEERS? How is that okay? Please consider and weigh in. (context below) 1/3
For context, I've just gone through interview I did with a woman who was hurt that a victim service provider did not follow up with her in the weeks or months following her son's murder. I had covered her case as a reporter, then reached out to her as part of this project... 2/3
"I'm not saying I'm the only one out there," she said. "I know how busy they are. I know they have so many cases. I just didn't realize it until I saw your message. When I saw your message, I was like, 'Oh my god, okay, somebody still cares.'"

Consider the weight of that.
