It’s no longer on the front pages, but you should know the elderly are STILL dying in tragic numbers in our care homes.
There is a terrifying situation unfolding at Inchmarlo care home in Aberdeenshire. We understand:

▪️It has 51 residents
▪️38 have tested positive
▪️Of the other 13 at least five have died.
Yesterday local officials declared a major incident at Inchmarlo.

It would give them the option of calling in military medics.

45 of the 125 staff have tested positive.

It was only stood down when NHS workers were found to keep the home functioning.
This is Mavisbank Care home in East Dunbartonshire.

▪️Run by HC-One
▪️14 COVID deaths of late
▪️Inspectors went in unannounced around the start of the outbreak and rated the response to COVID as 'Weak'.
Inspectors said:

▪️COVID guidance was 'out of date'
▪️Cleanliness was a 'significant concern'
▪️They were 'very concerned' about the 'risk of infection' for residents.
Alan died at Mavisbank on November 6 after testing positive for COVID19.

His daughter Linda accuses HC-One of 'weak management' and says the residents have been 'failed'.
Imagine the torment of having a relative in a care home (rated ‘weak’ on COVID) mid-outbreak.

Now multiply it by two.

Billy's Mum AND Aunt are in the home. He is 'petrified'.
Billy says as more residents test positive and die he feels it's getting closer and closer to his mum.

It makes him really frightened. His aunt has already tested positive. He can't bear it when the phone rings in case it's bad news.
HC-ONE say the inspection came at a time when many of their own trained staff were self-isolating and were ‘therefore reliant on bank and temporary staff, which contributed to some issues with infection control compliance.'
HC-One say Alan was a 'treasured resident' and they were 'deeply sorry' that inspectors found 'some elements’ of their ‘robust infection control plan were not being fully implemented' and they 'immediately took steps to rectify these issues.'
In Week 47 (mid-Nov) care home deaths accounted for:

▪️27% of all COVID related deaths in Scotland
▪️17% of all COVID related deaths in England and Wales.
After the tragic wave of care home deaths during the first wave, this was not supposed to happen again.

Hard lessons were learned on PPE, testing, hospital discharges etc.

All the more reason to wonder why it’s not talked about much, and why so many lives are still being lost.
