It’s time.

Here’s the thread of my 50 BEST ALBUMS OF THE YEAR [2020]
First of all, a mini ranking of the best EP’s

1. La vita nuova / Christine and the Queens
2. Alias / Shygirl
3. in a dream / Troye Sivan
4. Euphoric Sad Songs / RAYE
Here’s all the albums that didn’t make it into the Top 50. Would like to state now, and not for the last time, this year has been INSANELY good
50. THE ANGEL YOU DON’T KNOW / Amaarae

Afropop excellence, genre fusing to the extreme and vocals brimming with personality in spade loads make Amaarae’s debut album an absolute romp of a time. Glorious and wild
49. Duality / Duke Dumont

A how to guide on how to do a thumping, stirring and exciting EDM album in a new decade. Euphoric beyond belief, opening track Therapy one of the best dance tunes of the year by far. Overshadowed because it came out on a day of huge releases but... wow
48. Heavy Light / U.S. Girls

Meghan Remy’s seventh studio solo album is a weird experimental pop record that has the kind of untamed wildness that worked so great for Fiona Apple this year - a bit folksy, a bit 70’s, it has a small town feel with huge scope. I love it
47. R.Y.C. / Mura Masa

Mura Masa’s lean to grungy 90’s/00’s teen film energy on Raw Youth College has created an album that’s as grimy as it is danceable, stunning vocal features from Slowthai, Georgia and Clairo are absolute highlights
46. KiCk i / Arca

Immaculately produced and boasting features from ROSALÍA, SOPHIE and fucking Björk, the Venezuelan experimental icon’s fourth album is a triumph in avant pop electronica and if it doesn’t win the Grammy it’s nominated for we riot
45. Dark Hearts / Annie

Hey Annie! She’s back!!!! In 2020!! Gleaming 80’s synthpop, filmic storytelling, gorgeous melodies. Annie has always had an infectious way of writing pop music, and even though it’s her first album in 11 years, she’s never lost it
44. Hey u x / BENEE

Easily one of the most exciting debuts of the year, the New Zealander’s LP proves she’s more than just a viral tiktok hit and its indie pop sound coupled with fun songwriting and features from Grimes and Lily fookin Allen had me hooked on it instantly
43. HiRUDiN / Austra

The Canadian electronic band’s fourth album is one that makes you feel like you’re legging it through Scandinavian mountains - soaring vocals and huge production moments give it echoes of Bjork and Kate Bush, Risk It and Messiah are highlights
42. Hotspot / Pet Shop Boys

Neil and Chris’s fourteenth album was one of the first great records of the year, hitting my ears in January and never really leaving them. Over 30 years into a career of dance pop music and never losing their coolness and song craft. Wowing!
41. L'Ère du Verseau / Yelle

English translation: The Age of Aquarius

The french dance pop hitmakers’ fourth album had a the pressure of following up on their best LP: 2014’s Complètement fou. It’s a worthy successor. Bop after bop. Karaté and Je t’aime encore are year highs
40. Strangers/Lovers / Dagny

Norway’s finest Dagny finally dropped her debut record this year, and it featured some of the finest pop melodies of the last 12 months. ‘Somebody’ is a slap in the tits, and even on its softer moments it absolutely shines
39. Heaven & Hell / Ava Max

Took me a few spins to get Max’s debut under my skin, but once it got there it STAYED. Perfect pop choruses, production a la Kim Petras, way more than just Sweet But Psycho. Born To The Night, Naked, My Head & My Heart all 10’s. Don’t dismiss her yet
38. Gaslighter / The Chicks

Whilst I don’t think Gaslighter ever reaches the heights of its astonishing title track and lead single, the rest of the record is a gorgeously written country pop return from one of the most unjustly “cancelled” bands of our time. Can’t wait for more
37. 7G / A.G. Cook

The debut album from PC Music’s founder and label head is as maximalist as you’d ever want and expect and even more so. With 49 songs and running at 2 hours and 39 mins, it’s ludicrous, it’s adventurous, it’s hit and miss but it’s boundary breaking as always
36. Renaissance / Aluna

Aluna Francis’s first release without George is a celebration of dance music, dancehall, funk, Caribbean, pop, house - a cacophony of groove in a year too circumstantially unfair to let us dance in clubs to it. Beast of an album
35. Positions / Ariana Grande

Ari’s 6th album was at first for me a disappointment - 0 artistic growth or development and felt very much playing it safe. But Positions is charming and has a lot of replay value. It’s hard to hold safeness against her when she’s clearly having fun
34. Leave It Beautiful / Astrid S

FINALLY we have Astrid’s debut album, after years of excellent single and EP drops her first album is bombastically produced scandipop that bounds along a gallop a minute with immaculately constructed hooks and melodies. Bloody great stuff
33. Seeking Thrills / Georgia

Mercury nominated second album by the curly haired queen feels special to me - it was the last album I saw live on my last gig/night out before lockdown. It bangs even harder live, and nearly every song matches the wow of About Work The Dancefloor
32. Manic / Halsey

Halsey’s third album is also her best - a pop album that ventured from the conventional to the bizarre, to rock to folk and back to pop. It’s got great storytelling, great choruses and takes risks and feels just like the perfect record Halsey should be making
31. My Agenda / Dorian Electra

How does Dorian follow up the acclaim of their 2019 LP Flamboyant? With a hard, aggressive, experimental, abrasive electronic/metal record that sings about edgelords and incels with features from The Village People and Rebecca Black... Of course
30. Rare / Selena Gomez

Despite having one of the ugliest album covers since records began, Rare is a bloody brilliant pop record that features career highs in Lose You To Love Me and Rare, chock full of gorg Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels songwriting. Understated but v good
29. Crave / Kiesza

Another DEEPLY hideous album cover chosen as the visual for the criminally slept on Kiesza’s long awaited second album that is brimming with pop euphoria: her vocals are astronomical and the choruses give Carly Rae Jepsen a run for her money
28. Confetti / Little Mix

An album of sheer and unfiltered joy, Confetti is LM’s best album by a mile. It’s singles are stunning and there’s a lot of solid pop work in the album tracks. For me, this album just really solidifies their place as one of the best in girl band history
27. After Hours / The Weeknd

The Weeknd’s fourth album is an 80’s synthy masterpiece, anchored not only by the overwhelming excellence of Blinding Lights but by all its other hits and gems. The whole thing has a really grimy sin city feel to it that just makes it’s vibe so rich
26. Suddenly / Caribou

Dan Snaith’s 5th album under the Caribou name is one of the most lushly produced pop/electronic records you’re likely to find this year: some tracks feel so haunting and filmic whereas others are dance bangers. My first album by him and won’t be my last
25. Notes on a Conditional Form / The 1975

YES it’s too long. YES it’s pretentious. YES Healy is an arse. But when this album is great, it is GREAT. The genre exploration, the songwriting, the instrumentation... it’s all here. It’s a bit soft boy but I don’t care I LOVE IT
24. Rancho Catastrophe / Terror Jr

Never has a band been more slept on in the pop world like Terror Jr. Their second album, and their first as independent artists, is an astonishing wow. The fun they have with their lyrics and production is unmatched. So so good
23. 2000AND4EVA / Bree Runway

If you didn’t know Bree Runway was IT before, 2020 was the year you really learnt. A fucking excellent album featuring some of the biggest and best songs of the year (Damn Daniel, Little Nokia). Nommed for sound of 2021 and if she doesn’t win.. riot
22. Black Country Disco / Tom Aspaul

The love letter to the Midlands through the power of dance and disco pop makes BCD the career highlight Aspaul has been working towards over the past few years. It’s a blast from start to fin, and the short film he released is equally perfect
21. Dedicated Side B / Carly Rae Jepsen

I THINK SIDE B IS BETTER THAN SIDE A, AND I’M NOT AFRAID TO SEE IT

The queen of pop euphoria never slows down and this slightly surprise release is underrated but so infectious - not a bad tune on it and the Jack Antonoff stuff is so wow
20. DISCO / Kylie Minogue

God, it’s glorious isn’t it? Everything Kylie touches feels like I’ve been dosed up on serotonin - a Dance floor icon marching straight back where she belongs after a country detour. Supernova and Real Groove slap & Say Something is a career highlight
19. The Album / BLACKPINK

Short, sweet, pretty much perfect. This year I fully became a BLACKPINK STAN. It clicked. I’m obsessed with this album. It’s produced perfectly, the star power slaps you in the face and never quits. They’re the biggest girlband on earth for a reason
18. Róisín Machine / Róisín Murphy

Murphy really did THAT with her disco opus; a thumping and club ready, stunningly mastered and flowing LP that makes me wanna sniff poppers till my nose burns off. The singles in their extended format hit harder and it needs to be played LOUD
17. Joyful Death / SONIKKU

This is a queer dance record for the ages. It’s cool, well written, perfectly produced, the choruses are huge and the atmosphere grimy. It’s a gay club at 5am. It’s everything I want
16. Club Future Nostalgia / Dua Lipa & The Blessed Madonna

What Dua and Blessed Madonna did here is era defining, and solidified the legacy of Future Nostalgia with a complete rework full of legendary features from the biggest names in their fields. It stands on its own, UNREAL
15. Plastic Hearts / Miley Cyrus

One of the best vocalists of our lifetime finally undoubtedly in her prime: a glam rock epic featuring the notoriously great covers and Midnight Sky - a song so fuckin good I have to pinch myself to believe it’s real. I’d die for her and this LP
14. Fetch The Bolt Cutters / Fiona Apple

The fact that the album title is taken from a line said by Gillian Anderson in The Fall sets you up for a raw and wild album that captures the insanity and ferocity of 2020 in experimental pop and rock directions. Fiona Apple is a god
13. Set My Heart On Fire Immediately / Perfume Genius

Mike Hadreas’ latest record is filled gorgeously with references to 80’s pop and classic rock sounds - his voice endlessly emotional and his lyrics so powerful. I feel like weeping whenever I hear Describe, its a PERFECT song
12. Songs For Our Daughter / Laura Marling

Marling writing an album to her fictional daughter has resulted in a widely acclaimed album that is endlessly gorgeous, graceful and beautifully sang and written. Not normally my vibe but over the last few months it’s had me entranced
11. Punisher / Phoebe Bridgers

God what a fucking GREAT album this is? Over the last few months I’ve just fallen head over heels for Phoebe - her songwriting is like no one else right now and everything just feels so powerful and moving. Her best album. Love it so much
10. 1000 gecs and The Tree of Clues / 100 gecs

How do you push last year’s 1000 gecs even further? You remix it out of its mind and recruit the best PC Music has to offer and fuckin FALL OUT BOY to create one of the most exciting albums that’s ever hit my ears. Music from 3020
9. Ungodly Hour / Chloe x Halle

Crikey they really ARRIVED in 2020 didn’t they? This album is perfection. The vocals, the songwriting, the storytelling, all the visuals, the live performances... it’s truly stunning and a testament to their gorgeous chemistry and family bond. LOVE
8. Women In Music Pt. III / HAIM

The sisters’ magnum opus is an absolute corker: a soft rock and indie pop odyssey of Americana that makes me feel so alive - whether they’re acousticing it up on heavenly Hallelujah or slapping my tits on 3AM. How will they top this?
7. What’s Your Pleasure? / Jessie Ware

This is Ware at a level of greatness I didn’t know she had in her after the middling nature of her last album. It’s exciting, it’s gorgeously produced, it’s sang stunningly and its just the best music she’s ever made. Deserves all it’s hype
6. Miss Anthropocene / Grimes

Grimes proudly declares this as her best album, and it’s easy to see why from the sprawling opener of So Heavy I Fell To The Earth. Not many people create a soundscape like Claire Boucher: this album is so special and has an unmatched dark power
5. how I’m feeling now / Charli XCX

Charli’s quarantine baby really exemplified how hard she works and how quickly she can make some of the best music in the industry. Created entirely during the first few months of lockdown, HIFN is up there with her best releases, full of -
- clever lyricism, bonkers production and avant garde pop music. Always marvel at how Charli toes the line between underground pop icon and household name, and the fact a major label lets her be so rogue with creativity in lockdown for an album shows how respected her acclaim is
4. SAWAYAMA / Rina Sawayama

This album is, put simply, a triumph. It’s the kind of album artists on their 5th record would dream of making. Self assured, exciting, oozing star power, full of insane vocals and Clarence Clarity’s production is at an industry best standard.
The award snubbing is a disgrace, frankly. But with or without the accolades, Rina is on an upwards trajectory showing no signs of slowing with an army of fans and critical adoration. This was her year, and her first of many
3. Future Nostalgia / Dua Lipa

Whilst it may not take the top spot, there is no doubt in my mind that Future Nostalgia dominated, owned and RULED 2020. It defined its sound and defined the charts. What Dua did here, has to really be celebrated. She could have played it safe.
After the success of her debut she could have put in about 10% of the effort she did, made an album with a couple of big singles and some filler and it would have been a huge commercial success. Instead, she put all her effort into an era: full remix album, b sides, videos, live
spectacles with guests even the most established of pop stars could only dream of bagging. She didn’t just avoid the second album slump, she obliterated it. This is how to be a pop star.
2. Chromatica / Lady Gaga

It’s so glorious to see Lady Gaga, arguably the most talented woman in music, at the top of her game. The pop craft here is off the scale: the chart ready bangers that are current whilst paying homage to the decades that created the genre as we know it
The eccentricity and theatricality of Gaga that we hunger for out in full force, the euphoria of her vocal over dance and house beats, it’s all here. The outfits, the visuals. There isn’t a bad song on the album, it never feels like a song is there to fill space. Everything has
single potential, everything feels well thought out and exciting. The only thing wrong with this album is that none of us have been able to listen to it in gay clubs like it deserves, but Chromatica always makes us feel so hopeful that the chance is round the corner
1. folklore / Taylor Swift

When this LP dropped out of nowhere in July 2020, it just felt... meteoric. It broke all the streaming records instantly. It’s what we needed. Created in secret in quarantine and then given to us when we needed it the most. Everything about it is so
special. The songwriting is genuinely some of the best I’ve ever heard in music, and really solidified Swift as probably the greatest lyricist we have in pop (with perhaps Lana as her rival). The stories she tells here are like no one else could write, and Taylor departing from
her autobiographical style into a third person folk inspired manner was done so beautifully. The songs here gleam with warmth, with heart, with an aching sadness or overwhelming yearning feelings of love. It’s beyond a career highlight for a singer who’s career is nothing but
highlights. And when I think back on 2020, I’ll think of the hours I spent in isolation in bed, or working from home, listening to Taylor tell stories of lovers, of last great American dynastys and, as always, of heartbreak.
