The Indianapolis Newsguild members are taking a 10 minute break from work to show solidarity as we continue contract negotiations with Gannett. We return to the virtual bargaining table tomorrow. Here's some of what we're asking for:
1. Build a more diverse newsroom. We want to close the wage gaps between white employees and employees of color, and between male and female employees. We're also asking for the company to commit to considering members of underrepresented groups when hiring.
2. Protect local jobs. Gannett is creating a Midwest Digital Optimization Team and has not clearly defined what tasks the DOT would perform. Job descriptions for its employees overlap with some of the duties of our newsroom digital producers, putting their jobs at risk.
3. Keep us safe, despite the pandemic. Many of us are still out on assignment in the community. We’re asking for the basic right to leave an assignment if we feel at risk, and to receive a small amount of hazard pay if we continue to work in those conditions.
