Had a random reminder today of this video I did 7 years ago with @cronkitenews while I was in grad school. https://vimeo.com/78879758
At the Cronkite News D.C. buro, we were so focused on Arizona news that @CNSCrane's rule was, "President Obama could be hit by a car outside this building, and unless the driver is an Arizonan, we wouldn't cover it."
That kind of constraint could make it slightly more difficult to find stories Steve would accept, especially if you didn't want to do another story about a congressional hearing, which was probably the point and made for good practice in honing our focus.
Some days that meant going to events or institutions inside the Beltway eager for a way to link it to Arizona, but coming away wondering why folks in Tuba City or Yuma might care about a given presentation.
We'd pore over daybooks & reports *hopeful* to find a good idea and ready Arizona angle--better still something photogenic--or we'd find something exciting & then have to hunt for Arizona in it. Like finding this exhibit, and Tucson at the heart of it. http://www.tucsonsentinel.com/local/report/101813_artificial_heart/at-heart-smithsonian-bionic-man-artificial-ticker-from-tucson/
When covering the Pentagon, it could be easy, like reporting on efforts to keep the A-10s in service, which were in part driven by Arizona's delegation and would redound to some benefit in the Tucson area (though I can't find any stories I wrote about that now, oddly).
Or when Syria used chemical weapons, for example, the buro's business reporter, @iambrandonbrown, linked it to the effect on the stock prices of DOD weapons suppliers like Raytheon with operations in Arizona. https://cronkitenewsonline.com/2013/09/defense-stocks-rise-along-with-talk-of-strikes-against-syria/index.html.
Other times, we had to get a bit more creative. For example, when I attended a conference where Michele Flournoy spoke about a growing number of women in DOD's leadership, it led to a story about two Arizona women in the Pentagon. https://cronkitenewsonline.com/2013/11/two-arizonans-are-among-growing-number-of-women-leaders-in-the-pentagon/index.html
Or maybe I had that story lined up first and Flournoy's comments were just the cherry on top. I forget now how it went down.
Anyway, uh... It's been 7 years and recent news has kind of jogged my memory...

Story on the "Old Guard" to go with the video in tweet 1: https://cronkitenewsonline.com/2013/11/arizona-soldiers-in-old-guard-say-honoring-the-fallen-is-the-greatest-service/index.html
