This year on #SportsTwitter in 🇨🇦 was all about the role athletes have in our culture outside the field of play. What became abundantly clear in 2020 is that when athletes speak, we listen. Here are a few tweets that I felt told the story of 2020.

#ThisHappened
In March, @TeamCanada made the difficult choice to not send athletes to #Tokyo2020 prioritizing the safety of their athletes over competition. Days later, the @Olympics would choose to postpone the Olympics as other member nations followed Canada's lead. https://twitter.com/TeamCanada/status/1242120438186151941
Then in June, college football star, @Hubbard_RMN, took to Twitter to share his discontent with the perceived beliefs of his coach based on a photograph that surfaced. https://twitter.com/Hubbard_RMN/status/1272601786449264642
His response led to real change at @CowboyFB, with @CoachGundy issuing this statement the next day. https://twitter.com/CoachGundy/status/1273002885283020809
As sports began to return in late July, @mcgillu graduate and favourite for the Lou Marsh award 🏆, @LaurentDTardif, opted out of defending his Super Bowl win in favour of supporting his home province of QC as a doctor on the front line against COVID-19. https://twitter.com/LaurentDTardif/status/1286839610727976965
When the @Raptors arrived in the @NBA Bubble, they made it clear that they would not be content with simply playing basketball and that they would use their platform to address the systemic issues of racism that are present around the world. https://twitter.com/raptors/status/1281302322287706114
This movement across the NBA was then further amplified by 🇨🇦 star @BeMore27 after an emphatic performance in the bubble with a simple tweet. https://twitter.com/BeMore27/status/1298717287130660865
This was not unique to the @NBA as the @WNBA was also incredibly vocal on the topic including the below tweet from one of the league's stars and @TSN_Sports commentator, @KayNurse11. https://twitter.com/KayNurse11/status/1308926999411527682
In the @NHL, we saw the birth of @TheOfficialHDA Founded by @evanderkane_9 & @Dreamer_Aliu78, the alliance was an integral force in ensuring the @NHL participated in the athlete protests in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake. https://twitter.com/evanderkane_9/status/1289643985250607104
The alliance and its members continue to push the league to play a role in supporting the fight against systemic racism around the world. https://twitter.com/TheOfficialHDA/status/1321588092193525760
Star of #CANMNT for @CanadaSoccerEN and @FCBayernUS, @AlphonsoDavies has never forgotten the important role he plays as an advocate for @Refugees even as the first Canadian male to win the @ChampionsLeague. https://twitter.com/AlphonsoDavies/status/1322661327626592256
More info and a great breakdown from some of my other @TwitterCanada colleagues on the year on Twitter led by @paulburns with inputs as it relates to entertainment from @michaelpalombo and public health from @_MicheleAustin here.
