We would like to express solidarity and support with the art historians who have criticised the event, “Re-Writing Women into Art History” on 3rd December 2020 which perpetuated a narrow view of 'womanhood'. 1/8
The Annual Public Lecture represents art history to general audiences so it is vital that it presents a balanced & inclusive representation of our discipline. 2/8
While the Association’s varied programme does recognise much of this, the Annual Public Lecture 2020 did not reflect their support of decolonisation. 3/8
We disagree with the implication that Europe’s past was solely white, straight and cisgendered in the late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth centuries (see scholarship below). 4/8
No members of the DECR committee were involved in organising the event but we are currently calling for greater transparency and reflexivity. 5/8
The Association have published a response and commitments to developing an equality, diversity & inclusion policy. The DECR committee recognise these commitments as important milestones for the subject association. 6/8
The DECR Committee has an upcoming programme of events dedicated to anti-racism and art history (see the DECR statement above). 7/8
