Listening to Poland's ruling party circles, I sense three scenarios in which they may consider climbing down the tall #ruleoflaw & #RecoveryFund tree.

One is a an "interpretation protocol" for the rule of law mechanism, ensuring that it can only be used to combat corrupt or fraudulent use of EU funds, as proposed by Deputy PM @Jaroslaw_Gowin (a moderate face of the Polish government) last week.

Another is asking the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) if the rule of law mechanism is consistent with the EU treaties - while, at the same time, withdrawing the veto.

Is this what MEP @JSaryuszWolski is hinting at?

Finally, they could simply seek to extend the negotiations until January 2021, so that the German Presidency cannot claim the success - while the Portuguese would do so instead.

A silly thing - but some in Warsaw could consider it a symbolic win.

Of course, this is just Poland. I have much less clue as to what could make Hungary budge (assuming Orban is not bluffing).

And the real problem is that Warsaw has made its position on the #ruleoflaw mechanism so much dependent on Budapest...
